What Can One Get from Disposal of Old Computers?

Some people who do the improper method of disposal of old computers leads to the increase of e-waste problems in their vicinity. When asked, they have committed it because they don’t know how it is actually done or if it would benefit them anything if they send it over to the recycling facility. If they only probably did some research, they would eventually realize that there is a better way to do it than just merely throwing it on the trash can.

The truth is that one can get something from disposing their computer through recycling facilities. The following are just some of the examples:

1.    Compensation

You surely have not thought that you will earn from your computer again once it is broken the day that you bought it. But by recycling it, you can get some form of compensation depending on what way you are going to do it. Some sell its parts to repair shops, some sell it at a lower price, and some upgrade it so it can still be sold at a good price.

Compensation can also come in another way aside from money. The good feeling that you get by giving it for free to a charitable organization can even be greater than money.

2.    Positive Contribution to the Environment

Healthy environment is needed not just by you but also the people around. Proper disposal of computers has a positive contribution to the environment. Natural resources are protected because toxins do not go to waterbeds and air.

Authorized facilities are well-equipped with machines that can extract harmful materials from your computer unit and convert them into substances that are safe.

3.    Possibility of Having Some Computer Parts Saved

If you are a technical person, you understand that computer parts are very expensive. Even if they work fine, the fact that even one of them would not function means that everything else won’t work. Therefore, there is a need to diagnose and isolate the broken part so that others can still be used upon purchase of the replacement.

4.    Lesser Garbage at Home

Having too much garbage at home is very stressful. That is probably why you decided on improperly disposing the old computer in the first place. When the alternative yet more effective method of disposing it was chosen (where it is sent in the facility instead), then garbage will be lessened at home for sure.

Can I Send Other Gadgets in the IT Recycling Facility Even if I Don’t Personally Own Them?

Your contribution in keeping the environment clean through this way is commendable. That’s why these IT recycling facilities won’t mind if you can send other gadgets even if you don’t personally own them. As long as they are your friends, family, or relative’s property, it won’t matter.

However, you should make sure that you have their consent so that it can be legally and lawfully processed, or there would be problems. In any case, evaluating their ownership can easily be done, especially with phones and other personal gadgets. Only with items that are declared to be under the government’s or private sector’s property where even the mere possession of those things is considered a crime would problems arise. Examples of which are:

1.    CCTV Cameras

You may be highly engaged in keeping our natural resources and environment protected that you were able to recognize CCTV cameras as part of IT gadgets. CCTV cameras (Closed-circuit television) are often found in banks, grocery stores, and government facility. They are also found in homes whose owners are very particular at safety.

You can turn over CCTV cameras to a recycling facility near you.

2.    Automated Teller Machines

Certainly, no ordinary individual owns an automated teller machine (ATM) unless he is very rich and interested enough to possess it. ATM’s components like the swipe card reader, speaker, and display screen are much digitalized that most of them can be recycled.

Other innovation from scraps of old ATM’s are now reaching a lot of users which makes recycling processes to be useful. Most importantly, they are to be done at an authorized recycling facility for IT gadgets to ensure that no information leak would be done especially that it reads important information from users’ cards.

3.    Modems

Modems are used to send both wired and non-wired information signals in and out of your computer. There are precious metals used in its manufacturing which makes it more valuable other than the wires that are found inside.

Modems can be big or small depending on the services they are supporting. Communications companies usually recycle modems by using the old case, and upgrading or changing the whole internal components.

4.    Library Computer Parts (i.e. Mouse)

What usually happens to mice and USB once they grow bad? Their materials can actually be remolded to make new ones. Some of those components are even used to create different gadgets, all to make sure that most of their parts become useful.

Things to Do When Buying a New Gadget

An IT recycling facility should be the place where your broken electronic gadgets go after all repairs and remedies have already been done. It is not a place where gadgets should go after they are found broken. If recycling it physically is the last thing to do, then what should be the first thing?

image

The very first thing that must be done should happen before the purchase of a gadget. The considerations made in choosing that particular product determines the life span of the gadget and its quality. Below are the things that you should do before the purchase:

  1. Know the right specifications

Whether you are buying a computer tablet, a printer, or even a calculator, you should know the right specifications for your needs. Electronics may have different manufacturers, some of them are well-known and some are not, but you can usually find similar specifications even with competing brands.

Prices of each manufacturer vary even if they are offering similar specifications for a certain product. Pay more attention to specifications because they determine how fast or how reliable your gadget can work.

  1. Do a research

Do not just into a gadget you have been dying to buy after having the money to purchase it. Do a research first. This means reading reviews about the product. This will give you an idea whether the product is worth it or not. It could come in a very attractive package but with low-quality components.

Also research about the lifespan of the gadget compared to others. Due to poor quality of internal components, consumers end up buying a new one again, spending more than what they could have spent for a high-quality product.

  1. Check the distributor

It happens sometimes that distributors or stores which are not owned by the manufacturers do not sell new stocks. This means that some customers who buy from them get a product from older supply. Those products could have deteriorated slowly, especially if they were not stored properly.

Check the reliability and popularity of the distributor from those you know. If they are popular their stocks could easily be bought assuring you that what you are going to get is new.

  1. Check the gadget for discrepancies

Before you pay to the counter, have the gadget tested first. This is one crucial thing that some consumers don’t do when they are in a hurry. If you are buying online, do not sign the courier paper until you have checked the item for discrepancies.

Once you found something is wrong, refuse to get the product and ask for a better one.

Preventive Measures before IT Recycling

Due to poor troubleshooting skills, one accidentally sends their gadget to an IT recycling facility even if it still works well. As a result, the gadget returns to you in a formatted state, deleting all the files in the process. If one among them happens to be very important, you will definitely feel irritated and angry while hoping that everything didn’t happen.

image

If you don’t have the time to learn how to troubleshoot your gadget, or if you find the instruction manual too bombarding, then you can at least remember to apply the following as preventive measures:

1.   Avoid exploring unnecessary options and buttons

Out of curiosity, we might sometimes find ourselves browsing through our gadget. Without any idea on as to how some function works, we instantly decide to try them. Eventually, changes will occur, leading to confusion or panic on your side.

If this ever happened to you, first find a friend who can undo the settings change so that it can return to what its normal state. And make sure that it would serve as a lesson to you from that time onwards.

2.   Keep it away from the reach of your children

Children are very fascinated with colours and other advances of the technology today. As a result, they are becoming more and more anxious into trying these gadgets for themselves. If this was disregarded, chances are you’ll encounter the same problems stated above.

Since you know better than they do, the best solution is to keep these items away from their reach. Have them focus on something else which is fit for their age. When they are already occupied, that’s the best time that you return to check on your gadgets.

3.   Only connect your gadget to trusted online and offline networks

One of the features that modern gadgets have is its capacity to connect both online and offline. In fact, wherever you may be, you might find several establishments allowing you to connect to them whenever you feel like doing so. This definitely makes your life even more convenient.

However, you should keep in mind that not all of them can be trusted. Especially if they don’t carry the establishment’s name, chances are it would connect you to a virus generating spot, destroying your gadget from the inside. It also works with USB connections. That is why you have to pick where to connect it to avoid them from happening.

IT Recycling and 3 Things You Should Know About It

One of the reasons why people are not that into IT recycling is lack of information. What they know about it is very limited that they miss its importance. The media and government have a great role in encouraging citizens to get involved with this program.

From an ordinary person’s point of view, there is no need to worry about broken electronic devices since those would not be clogging the rivers and drainages. This clearly tells us that the basics of e-waste recycling should be taught in detail.

The following are 3 of the basics that they should know:

1.There are people who can help

One user might end up keeping his gadget since he does not know where to turn it over. Even if he sees a lot of campaigns to recycle it, he does not really know how to do it. Plastic cases of gadgets, its metals are good for nothing if he does not have the appropriate machine to process it.

Another thing that users must know is that manufacturing companies nowadays are slowly taking responsibility of their broken gadgets, just like what Apple Company is doing. They invite their customers to return broken gadgets in exchange for freebies.

2.Recycling does not always mean a mechanical process

Another thing that users must know is that recycling is not necessarily mean a mechanical process. E-waste recycling also includes using the gadget as long as its main functions are still working. One example would be using it even though the casing has already cracked or faded.

Even when there is no available replacement for a gadget’s case, the user must still have the confidence to use it. After all, one device’s usability does not depend on how elaborate its appearance may be. The user can do some DIY to remedy the appearance of the device, and that still qualifies for recycling.

3.Save others

Users must understand that when they dispose electronic gadgets to trashcans, they will eventually end up in dumpsites. When that happens, the people in that area would have increased health risk due to the fumes of toxic substances in the gadget. Water in streams and rivers can also be contaminated as those toxic substances are absorbed deep into waterbeds.

Understanding those facts would make the users more responsible in recycling and save those which would be affected by making sure that their gadgets are recycled under appropriate conditions.
